Vietnamese people’s organizations contribute to ASEAN Human Rights Commission
(Vietpeace) The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) held a consultation seminar with Vietnamese people’s organizations over the review of the Term of Reference (TOR) of the ASEAN Inter-governmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) on April 17, 2014 in Hanoi.
The seminar was attended by VUFO Vice-President Nguyen Thi Hoang Van; representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, some reseach institutes, socio-political organizations and people’s organizations.
Ms. Le Thi Thu, AICHR representative in Vietnam, Deputy Director General of the ASEAN Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, briefed the participants about AICHR, its achievements over the past five years, including the drafting of the ASEAN Human rights Declaration - the first regional document regulating common standards and value of human rights, which was adopted at the 21st ASEAN Summit in Cambodia in 2012; the fulfillment of documents related to AICHR’s operations; the contributions to the process of ASEAN community building; and the establishment of co-operative relations with other partners.
Participants made discussions and comments on the TOR of AICHR towards strengthening AICHR’s capacity.
In addition, they also made proposals to such issues as: enhancing the information exchange between AICHR and other organizations; building a framework to strengthen the operational efficiency of AICHR and ASEAN; ensuring social protection; and attaching greater importance to enhancement and protection of the rights of vulnerable groups such as women, children, victims of Agent Orange, people with disabilities...
AICHR is currently attracting much attention of regional and local people’s organizations.
In preparation for the review of its operations over the past 5 years and its TOR, a consultation meeting with ASEAN people’s organizations will be organizsed on April 29, 2014 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
