Empowering millions of women and youths
Founded in the 1920s, WUSC is a Canadian non-profit organisation committed to building a more equitable and sustainable world. WUSC works closely with a unique and powerful network of post-secondary educatioinal institutions (colleges and universities), business entities, civil society organisations, and volunteers to provide education, employment and empowerment opportunities that aim to improve the lives of millions of disadvantaged women and youth around the world. WUSC matches the skills and experience of our volunteers with the goals and needs of its local partners to ensure sustainable development outcomes.
Being present in Hanoi since 1991, WUSC has implemented a wide range of education and training programmes in the country, which are highly appreciated by central and local counterparts. With a sustainable approach and professional volunteers, WUSC’s supports in skills and expertise such as teaching methodology, career skills training, marketing and communications, project management and partnership development have helped many Vietnamese youths and women escape from poverty and develop sustainably.
Particularly, Uniterra, a leading Canadian international development programme, is jointly led by two well renowned and trusted international nongovernmental organisations, WUSC and CECI (Centre for International Studies and Cooperation). In the over 10 years since its inception, the programme has shown the right vision and suitable approach that empowers women and the youth. The third phase of the Uniterra programme (2015 - 20120) will focus on two sectors - Tourism and information and communications technology - across many provinces in Vietnam and support improving employment opportunities for more 200,000 women and young people in Vietnam.
“I Have a Dream” inspires the youth
At present, at many community colleges and middle schools, many students feel unmotivated and uncertain about life goals. Before this issue, WUSC Vietnam has launched the “I Have a Dream” programme delivered by Uniterra volunteers in Vietnam.
“I Have a Dream” is a highly successful life and career support programme carried out by Uniterra Vietnam in 2015, including a series of workshops and extra-curricular activities. The programme will have the opportunity to get exchanged, instructed and motivated to establish their career paths and acquire soft skills and information needed to increase their capabilities to seek employment opportunities.
“I Have a Dream” has been successfully carried out in many universities and colleges in the country such as FPT University, Hanoi Tourism College, Binh Thuan Community College, Hue Tourism College, Hanoi Open University and Tra Vinh University and warmly welcomed and responded by students. With exciting activities, Uniterra volunteers share necessary skills through topics discussed like “What are your life goals?”, “What are your successful stories?”, “How to successfully achieve your goals? And “What are your action plans?” among other things, “I Have a Dream” encourages students to be persistent in their learning and training processes at school by sharing and helping them identify life goals and pursue commitments. Here, students also have the opportunity to practice English communication skills with volunteers. This helps you to improve your confidence and activeness in communications.
Attending the “I Have a Dream” programme at Hanoi Tourism College in April 2018, we felt inspired and excited with students there. They had the chance to exchange, share and raise questions to have a clearer look about hospitability and tourism sector with specific requirements for each job position and challenges exposed. The presence of invited alumni enthused students there, helping them see their career paths more clearly. “I had a chance to speak to invited guests and ask a lot about life and career experiences. This is really very useful for us when we hear directly from our precursors at the momentous time that we are preparing for our life and career,” said Quynh, a student at Hanoi Tourism College, at the event.
According to partner schools, “I Have a Dream” also helps connect and motivate their current and potential students as well as promote their skills and career training programmes for students. The programme also fosters the capacity and skills of professors, staffs and student officers to organise similar activities and help schools achieve their admission marketing goals.
