The Vietnam - Cuba Friendship Association in collaboration with the General Department of Defense Industry - Defence Economic Technical Industry Cooperation (GAET) held a ceremony to celebrate the 69th anniversary of the Moncada barracks attack (July 26, 1953 - July 26, 2022) in Hanoi on July 26.
On July 26, 1953, more than 100 patriotic Cuban young men opened fire on the Moncada barracks - the second latest military base in Cuba occupied by 2,000 soldiers of the Batista government. The attack was called "a cry to wake up the Cuban people", contributing to the decisive victory of the Cuban Revolution on January 1, 1959. July 26 every year is considered the National Resurrection Day by the Cuban Council of State.

Speaking at the ceremony, Cuban Ambassador to Vietnam Orlando Hernández Guillén said the Moncada barracks attack, though did not achieve the expected results, created a turning point in Cuba's struggle for national independence. The event opened a new stage where armed movement became the main form of battle. The attack also established a national liberation plan and led the way to socialism.
The Cuban Ambassador emphasized during the struggle for national liberation, and current construction and development, Cuba has received Vietnam's continuous support.
"The relations between our two countries is a true expression and example of a bilateral brotherly solidarity needed in today's world, amid crises and wars," said Orlando Hernández Guillén.
The Cuban Ambassador thanked the Vietnamese Party, State, and people for the continuous support. He confirmed that the Cuban people appreciated the legacy of in-depth friendship that two countries' leaders, Fidel Castro and Ho Chi Minh, laid the foundation.
Vu Hai Ha expressed his belief in the sustainable development of the Vietnam - Cuba friendship. Although geographically far apart, the people of the two countries always stand shoulder to shoulder and support each other. The comprehensive cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Cuba has continuously developed, becoming an invaluable asset to the two peoples, he said.
