ActionAid Viet Nam hopes that its ongoing and future projects in Soc Trang province and Can Tho city will continue after the merger of these Mekong Delta localities with neighbouring Hau Giang, said Country Director for ActionAid Viet Nam Hoang Phuong Thao.
A delegation of ActionAid International in Viet Nam had a meeting with Can Tho officials on May 27 to discuss orientations for the organisation's programmes and projects after the merger of Can Tho, Soc Trang, and Hau Giang.
Thao said that ActionAid is implementing projects in Can Tho and Soc Trang in the fields of sustainable agriculture, children's rights, women's rights, policy consulting, climate change response, capacity building, livelihood development, and public service quality improvement.
Vice Chairwoman of the Can Tho People's Committee Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep said that the city hopes to continue receiving assistance and cooperation from ActionAid for programmes and projects in areas such as climate change adaptation, education, support for vulnerable groups, and plastic waste reduction.
The city also needs support for improving local people’s livelihoods, especially for the poor, she added.
Nguyen Phuc Tang, Deputy Director of the Can Tho Department of Education and Training, said that when Can Tho merges with Soc Trang and Hau Giang provinces, it will have a larger ethnic minority community, which poses difficulties for arranging full-day schooling for all secondary school students.
He noted that just two-thirds of secondary schools in the city now have sufficient conditions to ensure full-day schooling. Therefore, the locality hopes that ActionAid will implement a project on improving classrooms for schools in ethnic minority areas.
Tang said also called for help to improve the quality of English teachers in those areas.
ActionAid, a global federation working for a world free from poverty and injustice, is working in more than 40 countries. It has been operating in Viet Nam for more than 30 years with long-term development programmes in the Northwest, Central Highlands, Mekong Delta regions./.
