Two Vietnamese men have saved two Japanese children in waters off Gotemba Beach in Mie prefecture after the youngsters were suddenly swept nearly 100 metres from shore and drifted about 700 metres along the coast by strong waves and winds.

Upon witnessing the incident on August 11 afternoon, Pham Quoc Dat, 29, and Tong Manh Tuan, 27, immediately jumped into the sea to rescue them. At the time, strong winds and a rapidly receding tide were pushing the children further away. After two attempts, they successfully reached and rescued them.

Speaking to a Viet Nam News Agency correspondent in Japan, Dat said the children’s mother had not realised they were in danger. The first attempt failed when a large wave pushed their floats beyond reach, he noted. After about 30 minutes battling high waves, Dat and his friend brought the children safely to shore.

The Naka Fire Department in Tsu city, Mie prefecture, officially invited the two Vietnamese nationals to its headquarters on August 28 to present them with certificates of commendation for their courageous act./.
