University of Havana launches Department of Ho Chi Minh Studies

To commemorate the 135th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh's birth, on May 19, the University of Havana (Cuba) launched the Department of Ho Chi Minh Studies under the Faculty of Philosophy, History, and Sociology.

According to the Vietnamese Embassy in Cuba, the department was established to foster in-depth, interdisciplinary research on the ideology, career, and legacy of President Ho Chi Minh. It also seeks to strengthen collaboration with universities and research institutions both domestically and internationally, contributing to the promotion of Viet Nam’s image and reinforcing the traditional friendship between Viet Nam and Cuba.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Cuba Le Quang Long highlighted the significance of May 19—both the birthday of President Ho Chi Minh and the day Cuban national hero José Martí sacrificed his life for national independence. He emphasized that these two leaders embody the global aspiration for freedom, peace, and justice among independence-loving peoples.

Ambassador Le Quang Long noted that Ho Chi Minh’s ideology serves not only as a guiding force for the Vietnamese revolution but also as a powerful source of inspiration for national liberation movements worldwide. He described the establishment of the Ho Chi Minh Research Department at the University of Havana as a meaningful initiative that fosters deeper understanding and connection between the peoples of Viet Nam and Cuba, especially among younger generations. Expressing confidence in its future, he envisioned the department evolving into a renowned center for research and education on Viet Nam, not just in Cuba but across Latin America and the world.

As outlined in the department’s plans, it will host a variety of activities, including seminars, talks, exhibitions, book introductions, and specialized research programs. Additionally, it aims to build an extensive collaborative network with universities and research institutions both within and beyond Cuba, with particular emphasis on fostering partnerships with Vietnamese universities.

Offering flowers at Ho Chi Minh Park in Havana

On the same day, the Vietnamese Embassy in Cuba held a flower offering ceremony at the statue of President Ho Chi Minh in the Park named after him in the capital Havana.

The ceremony was attended by Ambassador Le Quang Long, embassy staff, Vietnamese students, representatives of the Cuba-Viet Nam Friendship Association, and the local community.

According to information from the Vietnamese Embassy in Cuba, speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Le Quang Long emphasized: "President Ho Chi Minh is not only the father of the Vietnamese people, but also a symbol of the global national liberation movement. His ideology will forever be the torch illuminating the cause of building and defending the Fatherland".

The Ambassador also affirmed the deep similarities between President Ho Chi Minh and Cuban national hero José Martí - two great thinkers who devoted their whole lives to the ideals of independence and freedom. According to the Ambassador, Ho Chi Minh Park in Havana is not only a symbol of Viet Nam-Cuba friendship, but also a bridge for the young generations of the two countries to continue to cultivate the relationship "forever green, forever sustainable".

Towards the 65th anniversary of the establishment of Viet Nam - Cuba diplomatic relations (December 2, 1960 - December 2, 2025), the Ambassador called for promoting activities to spread Ho Chi Minh's ideology, especially among young people, as a practical way to continue and develop the traditional solidarity between the two peoples.
