Speaking at the ceremony, the Ambassador of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to Vietnam Saj U. Mendis emphasized that the two countries will continue to strengthen their traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation, especially in the economic field.
The Singhalese ambassador said that Vietnam's development since the war has become a role model for many countries around the world. He also thanked the Vietnamese government and people for their help and support to the government and people of Sri Lanka during a difficult and challenging period.

He stressed that in economic cooperation, Sri Lanka and Vietnam will continue to bring the practical benefits to the two peoples, making positive contributions to the country, for peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and in the world.
The ceremony was also to honor the heroes and martyrs who sacrificed to protect the independence, unification and territorial integrity of the country. The delegations joined in to light the lamp to pray for peace.
There was also a public reading of the Independence Day's greeting message from President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Foreign Minister Ali Sabry.

* Vietnam - Sri Lanka: Half a century of traditional friendship and cooperation
Vietnam and Sri Lanka officially established diplomatic relations on July 21, 1970. Over half a century of development, both have always consolidated good traditional friendships and enhanced multifaceted cooperation.
Vietnam and Sri Lanka have established three bilateral cooperation mechanisms, including Joint Committee on Economy, Science and Technology; Political References; Vietnam-Sri Lanka Commercial Joint Subcommittee. The two countries have signed more than 30 bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding to promote cooperation between the two sides.
Sri Lanka has three friendship organizations with Vietnam, namely Sri Lanka - Vietnam Solidarity Association, the Sri Lanka – Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship Association. and the Vietnam-Sri Lanka Friendship Fund. Vietnam has two friendship organizations with Sri Lanka: the Vietnam - Sri Lanka Friendship Association and the Vietnam - Sri Lận Parliamentary Friendship Association.
