Hanoi's Morocco Gate To Get Major Restoration

The Morocco Gate is a baroque-style structure, an important cultural heritage of Hanoi.

The Viet Nam - Morocco Friendship and Cooperation Association on May 24 visited and worked with the People's Committee of  Hanoi's Ba Vi district to discuss plans to preserve and repair the Moroccan Gate.

At the meeting, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Phan Tam, President of the Viet Nam - Morocco Association of Friendship and Cooperation, gave preliminary information about Viet Nam and Morocco relations, especially in cooperation. economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges.

Hanoi's Morocco Gate To Get Major Restoration
The Morocco Gate is the only and unique Muslim architectural and cultural work of Moroccan style that still exist in whole the Asian continent.

Tam emphasized that the Morocco Gate is a symbol in the relationship between the two countries, not only having historical value but also demonstrating international solidarity between Viet Nam and Morocco in particular and with African countries in particular.

Six years ago, the Morocco Gate was restored by  Hanoi and the Moroccan embassy, but over time it gradually deteriorated. The Deputy Minister suggested that in addition to renovation, it is also necessary to and promote historical values so that the Morocco Gate becomes a cultural address.

Regarding the restoration of the Morocco Gate, Chairman of the Ba Vi People's Committee Do Manh Hung proposed mobilizing social resources for the funding. The Gate is currently located on land belonging to a privatized farm, not managed by the district. Therefore, the district wants to bring this area back to the state management. From now on, it will be more convenient to repair and protect, so that the Moroccan Gate becomes a relic.

The locality wishes to have experts and specialists participate, collect information, record and form documents to submit to the competent authority to decide to recognize the Morocco Gate as a relic.

Agreeing with the proposed opinions, Deputy Minister Phan Tam said that it is necessary to mobilize existing social resources to repair the Gate. He requested Ba Vi district to soon prepare documents to submit to  Hanoi and relevant agencies to recognize it as a relic.

The Viet Nam-Morocco Friendship and Cooperation Association will support the district in the process of preparing documents. Once the relic is recognized, the arrangement of resources for repair will be more convenient.

Morocco Gate was built between 1956 and 1960 by Moroccan soldiers who left the French army and joined the Liberation Army of Viet Nam (Viet Minh) during the Indochina war.
From 1946 to 1954, they fought alongside Vietnamese people for the independence of the nation.
The gate was built with Vietnamese materials, inspired by the Moorish architectural style of Moroccan imperial cities.
