Introducing the History of Vietnamese Ao Dai to Japanese Friends

On October 19, a "History introductory session" was held at the Ho Chi Minh City office of the Japanese Consulate General. The Ao Dai is now well recognized as a traditional dress and a distinctive aspect of Vietnamese culture. The 50th anniversary of the beginning of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Japan occurs in 2023.

In celebration of the 92nd anniversary of the Vietnam Women's Union's formation (October 20, 1930 - October 20, 2022), and also in an effort to further friendship, collaboration, and understanding between the two countries, Vietnamese Ao Dai through the ages was a "History introduction session" between the Vietnamese and the Japanese people that was organized on October 19 in the afternoon by the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organizations (HUFO) and the Vietnam-Japan Friendship Association of Ho Chi Minh City.

The Japanese visitors included Watanabe Nobuhiro, the Japanese consul general in Ho Chi Minh City, and his wife, as well as members of the JETRO (Japan Trade Promotion Organization) in Ho Chi Minh City, the local business community, and the consulate's staff.

If the kimono is the national costume of Japan, then the Ao Dai is the national costume of Vietnam, where it has existed for a very long time. The Ao Dai has undergone significant change throughout history while yet upholding the traditional delicate attractiveness of Vietnamese ladies.

Japan and the business community, the Japanese community living, working and studying in Ho Chi Minh City jointly organize diverse, practical and meaningful activities in order to enhance understanding between the two countries, contributing to consolidating and enhancing the friendship of the two countries in general, between Ho Chi Minh City and provinces and cities in Japan in particular.
