People-to-People Diplomacy Remains Pillar of Viet Nam-Cambodia Relations

On June 26 in Hanoi, President of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) Phan Anh Son received Cambodian Ambassador to Viet NamTouch Sopharath. During the meeting, both sides expressed their desire to strengthen coordination in implementing people-to-people diplomacy activities, contributing to the realization of the common understandings and commitments reached during high-level meetings between the leaders of the two countries and further fostering the Viet Nam-Cambodia friendship.

At the reception, Phan Anh Son wished Ambassador Touch Sopharath a successful tenure in Viet Nam. He expressed confidence that the Ambassador would build on the fruitful cooperation between the Embassy of Cambodia and the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations, as well as the Viet Nam-Cambodia Friendship Association, thereby further deepening the traditional friendship between the two countries.

Phan Anh Son gave an overview of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations' central role in carrying out people-to-people diplomacy. He noted that the Viet Nam-Cambodia Friendship Association is one of the Union's key bilateral friendship organizations, having made significant contributions to strengthening the friendship between the peoples of the two countries.

On that basis, Phan Anh Son proposed that the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations, the Embassy of Cambodia in Viet Nam, and the Viet Nam-Cambodia Friendship Association jointly organize forums and business networking events for enterprises from both countries, helping translate the high-level leaders' commitments to promoting economic and trade cooperation into concrete actions. According to him, through the channel of people-to-people diplomacy, these activities would create opportunities for business communities in both countries to strengthen connectivity while also gaining a deeper understanding of Viet Nam-Cambodia relations, how the two peoples perceive one another, and how each side's respective strengths can be leveraged for cooperation.

He also proposed jointly organizing exchange activities at several Vietnamese universities and research institutes, where the Cambodian Ambassador could share the Cambodian Government's vision for bilateral relations. In addition, he suggested that the Ambassador join local working visits organized by the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations and the Viet Nam-Cambodia Friendship Association. According to Phan Anh Son, such visits would enable the Ambassador to meet local authorities, friendship associations, and local residents, while hearing more perspectives on Viet Nam-Cambodia relations in the past, present, and future. This, in turn, would contribute to enhancing mutual understanding, strengthening political trust, and reinforcing the social foundation of bilateral ties.

Ambassador Touch Sopharath expressed her hope for continued coordination and support from the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations in implementing the orientations and outcomes of the meetings between the two countries' senior leaders. She noted that 2027 will mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Viet Nam and Cambodia, an important milestone for both sides to further expand cooperation and people-to-people exchanges.

Ambassador Touch Sopharath highly appreciated the proposals put forward by President Phan Anh Son and affirmed her commitment to working with the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations to implement these cooperative initiatives, thereby strengthening exchanges, mutual understanding, and connectivity between the peoples of the two countries.
