US veterans foster reconciliation and strengthen Viet Nam-US Relations

On July 11 in Hanoi, Vice President of the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO) Dong Huy Cuong received a delegation from the US Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), led by former Commander-in-Chief Larry Rivers.

During the reception, Vice President Dong Huy Cuong expressed his pleasure in welcoming the VFW delegation on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the normalization of Viet Nam-US relations (July 11, 1995 - July 11, 2025).

Informing the delegation, he noted that a series of friendship exchange programs jointly organized by the US Diplomatic Mission in Viet Nam and VUFO is currently taking place in various localities across the country, with the aim of spreading a message of peace and cooperation to the broader community.

VUFO Vice President Dong Huy Cuong emphasized that in recent years, both Viet Nam and the US have made continuous efforts to heal the wounds of war and strengthen cooperation based on peace and mutual respect. He expressed appreciation for the coordination and support provided by the US, including US veterans’ organizations, in areas such as clearing unexploded ordnance and conducting searches for missing-in-action personnel from the war.

VUFO has frequently welcomed delegations of American veterans visiting Viet Nam to learn more about the country and its people, and to participate in humanitarian and charitable activities. He commended the meaningful contributions made by US veterans in helping to heal the scars of the past and in supporting post-war recovery efforts. According to him, the efforts of American veterans in Viet Nam have inspired younger generations in both countries to further nurture the Viet Nam-US friendship and cooperation.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Larry Rivers affirmed that VFW will continue to contribute to the healing of war wounds, particularly through efforts to assist in locating missing soldiers and clearing leftover explosives and ordnance. He expressed a desire to strengthen coordination with VUFO in sharing information and connecting with relevant organizations and individuals across various provinces in Viet Nam.
