General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and President of China Xi Jinping on July 20 came to the Vietnamese Embassy in Beijing to mourn the passing of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam(CPV) Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong.
Writing in the condolence book, Xi expressed his deep sympathy over the death of the Vietnamese Party leader.
He told Vietnamese Ambassador Pham Sao Mai that Trong is a consistent Marxist and a great leader of the Vietnamese Party and people.
He devoted his whole life to the Vietnamese Party, State and people, led the nation to carve out major achievements in the socialism building cause, and received support and love from the whole Party, military and people, Xi said, affirming that China always bears in mind the significant contributions by the Vietnamese leader to bolstering the traditional “comrade and fraternal” friendship between the two countries.
Earlier on July 19, the CPC Central Committee sent condolences to the CPV Central Committee over the passing of the Vietnamese leader.
In his statement on the passing of the Vietnamese Party leader, US President Joe Biden affirmed that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was a champion of the deep ties between the American and Vietnamese people whose leadership helped nurture the friendship and partnership the two countries enjoy today.
“His 2015 historic visit to the White House was a milestone in our bilateral relationship. Thanks to his vision, during my 2023 state visit to Hanoi, Viet Nam and the United States became “comprehensive strategic partners,” the highest level of partnership in the Vietnamese system. The people of Viet Nam and the United States – and people across the Indo-Pacific region – enjoy greater security and opportunity today because of the friendship between our two countries. That is thanks to him,” he wrote.
“The United States – and I personally – will remember and appreciate his commitment to reconciliation and to building a future oriented toward peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and around the world. We honor his legacy and mourn his passing alongside the people of Viet Nam,” Biden added.
In his message of condolences, Japanese PM Kishida Fumio asserted that the exchanges of opinions with the General Secretary during their meetings have become unforgettable memories for him. He also showed his deepest gratitude for Trong's great contributions to promoting the Japan- Viet Nam relationship in various fields.
In their letters, the Australian leaders appreciated the affection and sincerity that Party leader Trong devoted to the relations between Viet Nam and Australia, especially in upgrading the bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership. They emphasised that Vietnamese Party chief's great contributions to the cause of building and developing a peaceful and prosperous Viet Nam will always be remembered by the international community. They also affirmed that they would continue to attach importance to cultivating "strategic trust" in the Viet Nam-Australia relationship as desired by the General Secretary.
Expressing his deepest condolences, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that comrade Nguyen Phu Trong dedicated his whole life to his Fatherland. Through the many years working in important positions of the State and Party, comrade Nguyen Phu Trong received high respect from Vietnamese people and had a great reputation in the international arena. Russia will remember the CPV General Secretary as a true friend who made great personal contributions to the establishment and development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and Viet Nam, Putin said.
“I had an opportunity to meet that wonderful person many times and will forever remain impressed,” he wrote, extending his sincere condolences and encouragement to the bereaved family and the entire Vietnamese people.
In her letter of condolences, Valentina Matvienko, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, described Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong as a big friend of Russia, an experienced political activist, and a famous State leader; and highlighted his contributions to the reinforcement of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Viet Nam and Russia as well as bilateral cooperation.
The letter of Chairman of the State Duma of Russia Vyacheslav Volodin read that it is difficult to fully appreciate the great contributions by comrade Nguyen Phu Trong to strengthening the friendly relations between Russia and Viet Nam. On behalf of the National Duma deputies of the Russian Federation, he extended his condolences to the bereaved family.
General Secretary of the Workers' Party of the DPRK Kim Jong Un affirmed that General Secretary Trong devoted his whole life to the struggle for the development of the Vietnamese Party and State and the happiness of the Vietnamese people; and spent a lot of efforts on strengthening and developing the friendship and cooperation between the two countries, in accordance with the spirit of the agreement reached at the summit talks in March 2019 in Hanoi. He emphasised that Trong’s merits will remain forever in the revolutionary history of the Vietnamese people as well as the friendly relations between the two countries.
In his message, RoK President Yoon Suk Yeol expressed his sincere condolences to the family of the Party leader and the people of Viet Nam for the loss of a respected leader. He affirmed that the achievements and wishes of the General Secretary for the brilliant development of Viet Nam and for the deeper friendship and collaboration between Viet Nam and the Republic of Korea will forever remain in the minds of the two peoples.
On behalf of the Government and people of Thailand, PM Srettha Thavisin sent his profound condolences to the Government and people of Viet Nam and the Party General Secretary's family for this great loss.
He expressed his admiration for the leader’s important and exemplary contributions to the cause of nation building and development, as well as to the strengthening of Thailand-Viet Nam relations, especially the declaration on the upgrading of the two countries' relationship to a strategic partnership on the occasion of the Party General Secretary's historic visit to Thailand in 2013.
The Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP), the Lao National Assembly, the President of Laos, the Lao Government, the Central Committee of the Lao Front for National Construction (LFNC), and the people of Lao ethnic groups expressed the deep condolences over the passing of the Vietnamese Party leader.
Viet Nam has lost a steadfast revolutionary leader; and the Party leader's passing away is big loss to the Party, State, people of Viet Nam and his family, the message wrote.
It further said that throughout his revolutionary career, he devoted all his energy and intelligence to important works in the cause of national liberation and reunification, and the renewal of the Communist Party of Viet Nam(CPV), especially the Party building and rectification, as well as in the fight against corruption and other negative phenomena, helping Viet Nam continuously develop, thus raising the country's position in the international and regional arena. Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong has become an outstanding leader of the era.
The Party, State, and people of Laos have lost an extremely close and dear comrade. He is a revolutionary leader in the new era, a successor of President Ho Chi Minh, making great, valuable and important contributions to strengthening and nurturing the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two Parties, States and peoples of Laos and Viet Nam.
"We believe that the Party, State and people of Viet Nam will turn this loss into solidarity strength, continue moving forward, building Viet Nam into an industrialised and modernised country, and achieving the target of rich people, a strong country, and a fair, democratic, and civilised society," it said.
President of the Cambodian People's Party Hun Sen showed his sadness at Party General Secretary Trong's passing away, which he described as a great loss to the CPV, the Vietnamese State and entire people.
The legacy of comrade Trong, a clear-minded leader who devoted his entire life to the struggle for Viet Nam's independence and for peace and prosperity of the Vietnamese people will be remembered by many generations, stated Hun Sen.
The CPP leader underlined that through his leadership, Party General Secretary Trong has reinforced the friendship and brotherhood with Cambodia and, for years, strived to enhance the close cooperation not only between the CPP and CPV but also between the two Governments and peoples.
Hun Sen extended his deep and sincere condolences to the bereaved family.
In his letter, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet wrote that Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong devoted his whole life to the revolutionary cause of the CPV and peace, development, and prosperity of Viet Nam. Viet Nam has lost an outstanding leader, and Cambodia has lost a good friend who always strived to contribute to the Viet Nam-Cambodia brotherly relationship, he stated.
Mourning the Vietnamese Party leader, President of the Cambodian National Assembly Khuon Sudary described Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong as an outstanding leader, with profound vision and great dedication, who had a great impact on Viet Nam's socio-economic development and institutional modernisation.
His passing away leaves a great loss not only to Viet Nam but also to everyone who had the honour of knowing him, Khuon Sudary wrote.
“We are extremely grateful for Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's continuous dedication in promoting the strong relationship between Viet Nam and Cambodia as well as his important role in bringing the two countries closer together,” she stated.
On July 19, the Cuban National Assembly observed a minute in commemoration of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
In their letter, General Raúl Castro Ruz and First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee and President of Cuba Miguel Díaz Canel-Bermúdez expressed their deepest condolences to the family of Party General Secretary Trong and the Vietnamese people.
The passing away of comrade Nguyen Phu Trong is an irreparable loss for Cuba. Cuba will always remember comrade Nguyen Phu Trong as a great brother who tirelessly promoted the special friendly relationship between the two Parties, parliaments, Governments, and peoples.
“Our beloved friend Nguyen Phu Trong will be remembered by generations of Cubans as a pillar in the long-standing traditional friendship between our two countries and as a great brother who was always ready to give his hand of solidarity to Cuba in the most complex and challenging situations.....Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong's life and career are a priceless legacy for future generations. His contributions to the role of the Communist Party, the creative application of Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh's thought, and his vision of international relations in the current context are among his outstanding contributions to the building of socialism in Viet Nam. This will be reflected in new victories in the Doi Moi cause in Viet Nam under the wise leadership of the CPV,” read the letter.
Showing his grief at the Vietnamese leader’s passing, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that it leaves a huge void.
The leader told the Viet Nam News Agency (VNA) that Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's vision of maintaining strategic autonomy and promoting good governance in Viet Nam resonated deeply with himself personally when he met the leader in his official visit to Viet Nam in July 2023.
The Vietnamese Party leader's foresight on the relationship between Viet Nam and Malaysia will remain long, he said, stressing that Trong's legacy will inspire future generations in Viet Nam and across Southeast Asia.
Meanwhile, in his letter of condolences to President To Lam, Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam underscored that Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's dedication to the fight against corruption is a decisive factor in his leadership role. The leader had a steadfast belief in Viet Nam's potential and worked tirelessly to ensure that the Party and Government of Viet Nam are in the best position to realise it, wrote the Singaporean President.
Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong stated that throughout his decades-long career, including 13 years as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, Trong's leadership greatly contributed to promoting Viet Nam's rapid economic growth and improving people's living conditions.
The Indian parliament on July 22 held a moment of silence before beginning its monsoon session to commemorate General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong, who passed away on July 19.
In their messages of condolences at the event, Chairman of the Upper House (Rajya Sabha) Jagdeep Dhankhar and Speaker of the Lower House (Lok Sabha) Om Birla stated that the General Secretary was respected by the Vietnamese people from all walks of life during his 13 years of Party leadership. They spoke highly of his central role in the development of Viet Nam as well as the Viet Nam - India friendship and the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations.
Chairman of the Mongolian People's Party (MPP) and Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene wrote that the MPP always remembers the contributions of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in developing relations and strengthening the friendship and comradeship between the two peoples and two Parties.
In his message, King Charles III of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland hoped that the Vietnamese people will be strong and steadfast in the difficult time. The King recalled his impressions and memories with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong during his visit to the UK in 2013, and expressed his appreciation for the General Secretary's devotion to the Vietnamese people as well as his leadership role in promoting Viet Nam's close relations with other countries through the bamboo diplomacy policy.
President of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro affirmed that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is a great friend of Venezuela, a tireless soldier fighting for the nation, an intellectual torch for Viet Nam's great changes. President Maduro expressed the solidarity with the Vietnamese people and affirmed the two couuntries' people will always stay united and cooperate.
Vice President of the PSUV Diosdado Cabello sent a message of condolences to the CPV Central Committee and people fo Viet Nam.
King of Saudi Arabia Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince, Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud cabled condolences to President To Lam.
President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko extended condolences to President To Lam.
Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeenko also sent condolences to the leader of the National Assembly and people of Vietnamese.
Meanwhile, Head of "White Russia" Party of Belarus Oleg Romanov sent letters of condolences to the CPV Central Committee and the family of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
