VUS President, Ambassador Nguyen Tam Chien has sent a letter to Senator Patrick Leahy to express appreciation for his sponsorship and the co-sponsorship by other senators in the U.S. Senate of S.RES.412.
Passed by the Senate on July 10, 2014 S.RES. 412 is a resolution reaffirming strong support of the U.S. government for freedom of navigation, and other internationally lawful uses of sea and airspace in the Asia-Pacific region, and calling for peaceful diplomatic resolution of outstanding territorial and maritime claims and disputes, including the East Sea (aka South China Sea).
It is notable that the resolution strongly calls on China to withdraw its HD-981 drilling rig and associated maritime forces from their positions in Vietnamese waters, to refrain from maritime maneuvers contrary to International Regulations Preventing Collision at the Sea (COLREG), and to return immediately to the status quo as before May 1st, 2014.
The VUS expressed hope to receive continued positive support from all U.S. Senators, as well members of the U.S. House of Representatives to help ensure mutual understanding, better relations, and friendship and cooperation in the context of the comprehensive partnership agreed between Vietnam and the United States.
